Therapy

Finding someone to talk through your issues with can help so much – it’s important that we don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed about mental health problems. There are lots of different kinds of therapy available in Hong Kong – from mindfulness meditation which is all the rage at the moment, to therapy with a counselor.

Finding a therapist is actually quite easy, there are plenty in Hong Kong. A lot of therapists also offer free consultations too – so there’s no reason not to talk things through with someone!

Drink sensibly

Drinking too much alcohol can really mess with your mental health, not to mention the fact that it makes you bloated and puffy.

Alcohol has a huge effect on self-esteem – when we drink, our inhibitions are lowered which means that people tend to behave in ways they wouldn’t otherwise do while sober. This might mean drinking past your limits – which can lead to a bad hangover the next day, not to mention all kinds of crazy thoughts and feelings.

Track gratitude with a journal

This is another thing that I really can’t recommend enough. Keeping a gratitude journal has been shown to improve happiness and self-esteem, as well as reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.

Getting outside every day is great for us both physically and mentally – sunlight exposure can improve mood as well as boost self-esteem!

Meditation is such an important component of self-care; we live such busy lives these days, and sometimes we forget how to be still and quiet. I’m not suggesting that you necessarily need to get into a full-blown meditation practice, but there’s no harm in trying a short daily meditation practice.

Research has shown that even five minutes of daily meditation is enough to help clear the mind, reduce stress and improve mood. So why not try a short daily meditation practice?

We all need community, and I think that being part of a group or friendship circle is so important for our mental well-being. Even if you have to force yourself out of your front door sometimes – it’s always worth it in the end!

Ask for help to improve your mental wellbeing 

It’s important that we don’t try to go through life alone, and it can actually be really beneficial for your mental health if you let people in.

I know from experience that asking for help can be difficult – but reaching out to a friend or family member about how you’re feeling can make such a difference!
