Wanting to buy cheap groceries in Hong Kong?
Grocery shopping in Hong Kong can be an expensive affair. The high prices are a result of costly rents, and the fact that most of the groceries in Hong Kong are imported.
The key to buying cheap groceries in Hong Kong is to stray away from the more well-known supermarkets. Instead, try out favorite stores listed below.
Check out these stores for cheap groceries in Hong Kong; you will be amazed at what you will find and how much you can save.
This article will cover topics that include where to buy:
- Low-priced products similar to those offered at M&S
- Your health food needs
- Household food & products in bulk at low prices
- Inexpensive imported Japanese food
- Personal care products
- American products
1. Where can I buy similar products to M&S but at a lower price?
Uselect sells products predominantly from British supermarket Tesco, as well as some local fresh produce.
You can expect to find high-quality products at significantly lower prices than most other supermarkets in Hong Kong. Think of it as M&S Food but for roughly half the price.
Like most cheap grocery stores on this list, the shops themselves are small, but you will be able to find a full range of groceries that will meet your daily needs.
Our favorite products from USelect include a great British cheese and biscuit selection and jams, pasta, and ready to use pasta sauce. There are fifteen stores around Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
This is a cheap grocery store that is sure to put a smile on your face.
2. What is the best health food store in Hong Kong?
The Store Hong Kong
The Store Hong Kong was founded by super-fit Ben Stocker, who wanted to create a way to supply Hong Kong (and the rest of Asia) with the best international health food brands at more affordable prices.
You will find a huge array of brands here from Bulletproof, Oatly – Oat Milk, Sunwarrior, to Perfect Keto.
The Store Hong Kong offers a huge array of North American, Australian, and Kiwi brands. Shop here for all your vitamins, protein bars, and protein powder.
You won’t find better quality or lower-priced health food in Hong Kong.
3. Where can I buy dried food, canned food & domestic household products at low prices?
Prizemart is a popular discount small-scale supermarket that sells mainly discounted food items you can purchase in bulk.
A few stores sell frozen food, but most of the stores only sell dried and canned food and domestic household goods. Most of the time, these stores are very crowded, which is an indicator that you can get the best deals.
We recommend Prizemart for bulk-buy bargains for goods such as nuts, honey, peanut butter, and muesli – all of which are expensive and overpriced in regular supermarkets!
You will find some competitive bargain hunters in these stores, and it can get a bit crazy, but the prices will amaze you.
There are 24 of these cheap grocery stores around Hong Kong; locations include Wanchai, Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay.
4. Where can I buy inexpensive, imported Japanese food?
759 is a well-known chain across Hong Kong and has over 50 stores spread across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and New Territories.
This is a store specializing in importing goods from Japan, so if you’re a fan of Japanese products (especially irresistible Japanese snacks), this is the place to go!
Along with snacks, they offer a good selection of other food that includes fresh and frozen food, household items, and personal care items. For cheap groceries in Hong Kong, this is a store not to be missed.
5. What is the cheapest grocery store for personal care items?
Japan Home (JHC)
Different JHC stores seem to sell different products, but the store located in Wellington Street in Central tends to stock many household products at meager prices.
You can find toothpaste, hand soap, body soap, air freshener at prices generally less than half of what you could expect to pay at the larger supermarket chains.
We particularly like this store because they sell high-quality, well-know brands like Dove and Palmolive at seriously good prices. This is a seriously cheap grocery store!
6. Where can I buy cheap American products?
A&M is not a typical discount/cheap grocery store. But it is on the list because if you shop carefully and at the right time, you can pick out some great deals on a huge variety of items.
A&M is more than just a cheap grocery store; it also sells household goods (including cookware and toys) and has a wide variety of American imports.
So, if you’re missing home or just a big fan of American products that you usually can’t find in Hong Kong, A&M is worth a visit.
Locations: Central (L/G Asia Standard Tower, 59-65 Queens Road Central) & Stanley (Stanley Plaza, 23 Carmel Road)
7. Where can I buy the cheapest fruit, veggie & meat?
Hong Kong’s various wet markets are the place to go if you really want cheap groceries (vegetables, fruits, and meat) at low prices.
It might be intimidating if you’re new, especially when you don’t speak Cantonese. However, we can assure you that simple hand gestures will go a long way.
You’ll also be doing the environment a huge favor as the city’s markets tend to use much less plastic wrapping than its supermarkets.
Some of our favorite wet markets in Hong Kong are:
Wan Chai Market
Queens Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island
This is one of the largest government wet markets, providing all major fresh foods from 6 am to 8 pm daily.
Mornings are generally busiest as that’s when much of the food is first delivered, but you can still pick up a good deal later in the day.
Siu Sai Wan Market
10 Siu Sai Wan Road, Chai Wan, Hong Kong Island
This privately owned, air-conditioned wet market was recently renovated and offers a separate section entirely for seafood.
It has been re-designed to incorporate the old Hong Kong market culture elements in a more modern setting. Shoppers can even order fresh poultry via a screen and enjoy free WiFi.
