FAQs

In this section, we address the most asked questions about gluten free protein powders.

Is whey protein powder always gluten free?

Not always is the short answer. Powders can contain other ingredients containing gluten, so you always need to read the ingredients bottle carefully. The good news is that most companies online now share good photos of the jars, so you can check before purchasing.

Building muscle using protein powders

Do you want to increase your muscle mass? Using protein powder is a highly effective way of building muscle. NHS England explains this well.
Protein is an important part of our diet and key to building and maintaining all types of body tissue, including muscle. It contains amino acids, the building blocks used for muscle growth.
Source: NHS England.

Is there a gluten free protein powder?

Yes, all the powders we have reviewed above are gluten free.

What is gluten free protein powder, and why would you use it?

Gluten free protein powder enables you to use a protein powder but not worry about consuming gluten. It contains whey protein. You would use it as you would use any protein powder.

Reaching your daily protein intake

In general, you can use protein powder to get all your protein needs without necessarily eating a meal. You can achieve your protein levels, but without the unnecessary carbohydrates or unhealthy fats present in some of the foods you would need to eat to achieve the same results.

What is gluten free?

Cutting out gluten in your diet basically means that you cut the foods that naturally would contain gluten. This could be for health reasons – you might have been diagnosed with an allergy to gluten.  Or it could be a lifestyle choice.

Can gluten free protein powder make you gain weight?

Openfit has a great, straightforward answer to this.
If you eat more than what your body needs, you are likely to gain weight. But, no, protein shakes as part of a healthy, balanced diet will not make you fat on their own. In fact, boosting your protein intake can be a handy way to help control your weight and reach your goals, including increasing lean muscle mass.  Source: Openfit.com

What is gluten?

What is the best gluten-free protein powder to build muscle?

In our opinion, Orgain (reviewed above) is the best gluten-free powder to build muscle. Orgain ensures that every ingredient they include is rigorously tested to exceed quality standards. They also don’t include genetically modified ingredients to enhance the protein. So you know everything is natural. In our opinion, it is one of the highest quality gluten-free protein powders out there.

Is whey or plant protein better for building muscle?

Training peaks give a great answer to this. They say:
Plant protein sources build muscle and aid recovery as well or better than whey. Still, they can also improve our health, deliver a broader range of beneficial nutrients, and are much better for the environment.

See the full post they have written comparing plant-based protein powders’ benefits to whey protein powders.

In Summary

In our opinion, gluten free protein powders are equally effective at building muscle, providing your protein needs for the day, and maintaining a healthy weight as non-gluten-free alternatives. Going gluten free can be useful if you have a gluten allergy or if you want a lifestyle change.

Orgain protein powder gives you the gluten free element but also brings exceptionally high-quality nutrition to the table. It’s our go-to gluten free powder.
